Mark Kelton "Kel" Shurden Jr. died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at River Region Medical Center. He was 48.
Mr. Shurden was a graduate of Warren Central High School and Mississippi State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in marine engineering and shipbuilding.
He worked for the David Taylor Naval Research Center in Annapolis, Md., before becoming project manager in 1991 on the Dredge Hurley and MV Mississippi for the Memphis District Corps of Engineers. He worked with the Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, serving as a general engineer, contracting officer's representative, chief of the mat loading unit and Greenville Engineering Yard, project manager, mechanical engineer and chief of the revetment section.
Mr. Shurden was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Kelton Shurden Sr.; and a brother, Garland DeWitt Shurden.
Survivors include his wife, Penny Shurden of Brookhaven; his son, Garland Ros Shurden of Huntsville, Ala.; and his mother, Gilda Fae Miller of Vicksburg.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be in Ward Hall at the church from 12:30 p.m. Saturday until the service. Glenwood Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
